I did a hot chocolate bar for my Christmas/gender reveal party last night and it was a huge hit! Everyone loved the hot chocolate and different toppings. The only thing I changed was I used less sweetened condensed milk, about 7 oz and it was plenty sweet enough. I used Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips and it was perfectly decadent. Some of my guests added more milk to their hot chocolate though to cut the richness.
Question- Can I combine semi-sweet chocolate chips with the bars? I have some chips I would like to use up and wondering if I can combine the two? Thanks! Excited to try this recipe this weekend! I have to make two!
Oh I think a hot chocolate bar would be great idea for a family get together! I bought both the cup caddy and the condiment tray from Hobby Lobby from the basket section! Hope everyone enjoys the cocoa! ?
Hi there, sometimes cutting a recipe in half can mess with the consistency a bit if the slow cooker runs hot. With that said, I suggest replacing some of the heavy cream with 2% milk so it still has that richness but is easily pourable. You could also replace all of the cream with 2% but it will leave you with a thinner hot chocolate, and it just comes down to personal preference ?

Just wanted to thank you for your chocolate sauce recipe. I have used it for hot chocolate and chocolate milk ever since I saw it in your first cook book. The most essential ingredient to any hot cocoa bar is the hot chocolate, of course. Your chocolatey drink will be at the center of your dessert bar, so choose your flavor(s) wisely. This decision depends in large part on your guests. Classic hot chocolate is great for any party. This kid-friendly flavor offers the best canvas for any concoction. If you are entertaining a more adventurous crowd, try mixing things up by offering some alternative flavors like Spicy Aztec or Mocha.
Treat your guests to the ultimate experience, by including drinking chocolate made from solid chocolate (instead of powder). Rich, full-bodied drinking chocolate can be made in a variety of flavors using finely-chopped chocolate chips, chocolate bars, or even truffles.
The right cups are an essential aspect of any hot chocolate bar. Cups that are too small make it hard for guests to add toppings, while cups that are too large allow the hot cocoa to get cold before it is consumed. We are in love with these 12-oz mugs from Simon Pearce. Not only are they beautiful and made right here in Vermont, but our Digital Marketing Manager swears the glass Ascutney mug made her hot chocolate taste just that much more delicious.
No cup of hot chocolate is complete without whipped cream or marshmallows, or both! While these light and fluffy gourmet vanilla marshmallows are truly out-of-this-world, a generous dollop of homemade whipped cream is great for layering on plenty of other delicious toppings. Since some people may have a strong preference for one or the other, we suggest offering both.
When it comes to toppings, the possibilities are endless. For our hot cocoa bar, we decided to cut up some of our favorite chocolates and offer them as toppings. Extra-small chunks Almond Butter Crunch were the most popular toppings of choice. Chocolate chips, finely chopped nuts, crushed graham crackers, and candy cane pieces, also make great options! To create the ultimate hot chocolate bar, we think, the more topping the better!
Add a little sprinkle sparkle to finish off your creation! Whether you choose to include chocolate shavings, cinnamon, orange zest, toasted coconut, or colorful sprinkles, no hot chocolate is complete without a little something extra on top.

Everyone loves to watch them melt and explode with all the goodies hidden inside their chocolate shell. However, I do not recommend serving these for a large crowd unless you have plenty of space and multiple milk servers.
My must-have toppings are mini marshmallows, chocolate and caramel sauce (homemade recipe), whipping cream, chocolate bars (grated or chopped chocolate) or mini chocolate chips, and candy canes (chopped) or crushed peppermints. However, you can include any candies that melt.
Your hot drink station could include hot chocolate, coffee, and tea if space permits. In the past, I have used a small section of the kitchen counter for a simple bar. I have also used the dining buffet for a more elaborate bar. For example, when my children were young, I used a vintage cabinet in my kitchen, but I have moved it to the living room or dining room.
